May announced as Food Appreciation Month
We all love our kai and don’t like seeing it go to waste. But research shows households waste just over $1,300 worth of food each year. That’s why Every Bite is launching New Zealand’s inaugural Food Appreciation Month, happening this May.
During Food Appreciation Month, Every Bite’s Community Hub partners will facilitate local and online programmes across Aotearoa. The Every Bite programme is an easy, inspiring 4-week experience, offering practical skills, tips and tricks to help New Zealanders take the next step in their sustainability journey, and save money in the process.
In-person programme options - sign up now!
Or, join Every Bite online!
For those unable to join in person, there will also be an Online Facilitated Programme, led by sustainability coach Nicola Turner, which can be joined from anywhere in Aotearoa.
In-person programmes will feature a gathering at the start and finish of the month, to connect and learn insider tips, while the online programme offers this over three Zoom sessions, supported by regular emails and videos. Participants will learn, share, and celebrate success with a group of like-minded people who want to be more resourceful, and reconnect - with their food, and with each other.
Rachel Glasier, Every Bite Project Manager, says she is excited to see New Zealanders come together to tackle food waste, save money, and appreciate the journey of their kai. “We all have so many tips and tricks to share, and we’re thrilled to be able to bring it all together for New Zealand’s first Food Appreciation Month.”
“It is going to be a very special month; an opportunity for us all to pause and consider how we store, prepare and eat our food. Most of us live busy lives, and this will be a great opportunity for us all to reflect on all the resources used to grow our food and get it to our tables. When we waste food we waste all of these resources and contribute significantly to climate change and biodiversity loss.”
“There is a wealth of tips and tricks out there, from Love Food Hate Waste NZ as well as our wider community, including local chefs and educators, to help us make the most of the food we brought into our homes to eat. We'll share those so everyone can save money and prevent waste. There are so many reasons to get involved in Food Appreciation Month.”
Those interested in spreading the word to their networks can access a partner toolkit here, featuring social tiles, email signature, and text content. Thanks for helping to encourage more New Zealanders to Join the Movement!
